Chapter Ten

Frankie woke to the gurgling of a coffeemaker and Evan hunched over her suitcase, neatly folding her clothes and repacking. Her side of the bed looked barely touched. Had she been awake all night thinking about what happened between them? Evan had kissed her yesterday. And what a kiss. She’d replayed the softness of Evan’s lips and the heat of her mouth over and over during the stakeout and dreamed about it when she fell asleep. Her body came alive again with the memory, and she craved more. Did Evan, or was she regretting it, chastising herself for crossing that line? She could ask, but the set of Evan’s shoulders and her rigid, controlled movements were answer enough.

“How did I get here?” Frankie rose on her elbows and propped the pillows behind her. “The last thing I remember was lying on the bench in the van.”

“You sleep like the dead.” Evan slowly straightened and stared out the window for a few seconds as if gathering her composure. She then placed a tray with coffee, creamer, and sweetener on the nightstand beside Frankie. “A couple of the guys carried you from the parking lot, up the elevator, to bed, and you never opened your eyes or grunted. How is that possible?”

“When I reach a certain point, I just pass out.”

“What I’d give for one night of sleep like that.” Evan settled on the side of the bed, raked her fingers through Frankie’s hair, and slid her forefinger down her jawline. “You look rested.”

Frankie’s body ached at the touch, and she leaned closer, staring into Evan’s eyes. She stifled a moan when she saw her desire reflected back. If she didn’t do something with her hands, she’d grab Evan and urge her into bed. She lifted the covers, surprised that she was still fully clothed. When she looked back up, Evan was shaking her head.

“I couldn’t. It didn’t seem right.”

“But you’ve already seen me naked. No biggie.”

“Looking isn’t the same as touching, though it can be just as painful.” Evan held Frankie’s gaze briefly before reaching for her cup. “I’m glad you got some sleep.”

“Did you?”

Evan shook her head and stood. “I’ll be fine.”

Boundary established. Evan was back on comfortable ground and in control, so Frankie shifted to a safer topic. “What happened at the club?” She stirred her coffee and took a sip.

“Tyndall didn’t show, and the guys closed the place down. Of course, they want to try again tonight.”

“What now?”

“I was going to ask how you thought we should set up surveillance on the cigar shop since you’ve already done recon.”

Frankie placed her cup slowly back on the nightstand. “Wait. Am I still asleep?” She gave Evan her most innocent grin. “Did you just ask for my opinion on an op?”

Evan waggled a finger at her. “Do not do that. Don’t make fun. I’m trying to trust you and practice delegating. Besides, you’ve developed every lead we have so far, so you deserve to have a say in how we proceed.
